i was working for a famous rodent
living in fullerton decided to take a class at the university of across the street i found myself in maurice grays intaglio workshop he told us that home depot was actually the worlds largest art store even though they didnt know it he performed complex demos in beautiful aloha shirts without getting a drop of ink on himself and in his workshop i met steve reeder whose favorite phrases are (dryly) oh wow and (with dry enthuasiasm) thats genius steve was always around the lab talking about chomsky or duchamp or whoever he was reading that week he mixed really a lot of ink and every now and then he would actually print something for ten or twenty or thirty or forty hours straight steves unending printing sessions were inspiring soon i joined in the 24 hour marathon working on my xena: warrior princess five color lithograph |
it was the first and only time since back when id discovered a darkroom at ucla that the clock held no meaning in steves circlemaster series he editioned 12 colored circles with oblique reference to vasarely and then lithod dictionary animal entries on top with oblique reference to baldessari and then text on that with oblique reference to holzer after kathan brown sent me a copy of her second book why draw a live model? steve and another artist and i talked about how great the multiple, rashomonistic perspectives on a single subject were we decided to make the ross edition twelve artists (ross included) printing their impressions of one extraordinary artist ross chapoton out of my efforts to tell ross story came the idea for californium which ive spent the last two years on unfortunately ive not yet photographed penelope houston who steve said was essential |
