Kathan Brown

i’ve had three great printmaking teachers
ian colverson
maurice gray
and kathan brown
who
before the day i took this picture
i’d never actually met

i studied with ian at ucla
with maurice at cal state fullerton
and with kathan
between the covers of her book
ink, paper, metal, wood

ian’s printmaking class
was actually the first art class
i’d ever taken in my life

i worked for weeks
on this intaglio self-portrait
he helped me deal with line
with myriad other issues
and when the piece was finally done
we put the print on a counter
and ian leaned over it for really a long time
and he stared
finally looking over at me
and asking gently
“does it look so fucking awful
because you wanted it to,
or can you simply not draw?”

at an lax bookstore
of all places
i found
ink, paper, metal, wood
an extraordinary book
in that it manages to explore a triad of

her life journey
contemporary intaglio techniques
and
a few decades worth of art issues
and styles

summer of 1959
holiday trip to edinburgh
a backyard
pile of gears and metal parts
an etching press?
yes
students had diverted it
from meltdown for the war
it had a history
in the next four decades
it would have more

kathan and the rusty parts
took a freighter thru the panama canal
to a boyfriend
in a city she’d never seen
san francisco

married in ‘60
son in ‘61
crown point press in ‘62
the husband drifted away in ‘63

four decades of art and life
intaglio techniques from another age
in the service of making sense of life today

kathan brown’s journey
an inspiration
for life
for technique
for art
