Glenn Seaborg

i had hoped
to limit the souls
portrayed in this “collection”
to the living

to those individuals
occupying the unlikely interval
after birth
yet before eternity

on 25 feb 99
this hope became impossible
in a home
in lafayette, california
that he and his wife
had built with their own hands
glenn seaborg
passed away

among many other things
he was the co-discoverer
of 10 new elements
among them,
element number 97, berkelium
element number 98, californium
element number 106, seaborgium

in some ways
he is more famous
than brooke shields
but for some reason
they don’t hire
nobel laureates
to do jeans ads
the abbreviated summary:
nobel prize for chemistry
co-discoverer of ten new elements
and numerous isotopes
advisor to seven u.s. presidents
redesigner of the periodic table
for starters

perhaps because his achievements are so myriad
his life so large
i find it difficult to get my arms
my mind
around the life of glenn seaborg

perhaps this is why
i fixate on arcane minutiae
and the two morsels i find so captivating
are first
that he is in
the guinness book of world records
for having the longest entry
in the book who’s who

and second
that when he got on a train
from berkeley to chicago
to be a section chief
on the manhattan project
he carried in his briefcase
the world supply
of plutonium
